What a viscose fabric

The viscose that we are familiar with was invented in 1884 by the French scientist Guiller de Chardonnay. Previous attempts by other researchers have failed. What is viscose is synthetic or natural fabric? The answer is unequivocal - this is not natural material. It is produced on the basis of natural cellulose (wood). Sawdust of various tree species is turned into a thick liquid called cellulose xanthate. A whole day under high pressure is cooking wood in a solution of calcium hydrosulfite. Threads are formed from the resulting mass by forcing. It is interesting that if the same mass is pressed through thinner holes, then a well-known polyethylene film is obtained.

Fabric structure

If we consider the synthetic fibers used for textile production, then viscose is the most “natural” synthetics, because the sawdust (cellulose) used is of plant origin. Thanks to the use of modern technologies in production, we obtain fabrics that a layman can not distinguish from silk, linen or cotton. For its luster and smooth surface, viscose is called "artificial silk." To make it dull, it is diluted with special additives.

Properties and advantages

Properties of viscose fabric are very similar to natural, in particular to cotton. Soft to the touch, pleasant to touch the skin material, looks perfect in products and has a number of other advantages. For example:

  • Antiallergenicity. The material does not cause skin irritation even in people prone to dermatological problems.
  • Breathability. Like cotton, viscose is a breathable material; the body does not receive the “sauna effect”.
  • Hygroscopicity. The material has a high ability to absorb moisture. This figure is twice as high as that of cotton.
  • Antistatic. The fabric is not able to accumulate static electricity, does not spark during friction.
  • Thermoregulation. Viscose is warm in winter, but not hot in summer.
  • Persistent staining. A variety of colors for coloring is well perceived by viscose. The material does not fade, it retains the brightness of colors for a long time.
  • In washing, the fabric proved to be "excellent". It dries quickly.

Varieties of viscose

  1. Tensel (lyocel). This viscose is derived from eucalyptus wood. According to its characteristics, the material is close to cotton, soft, pleasant, silky to the touch. It absorbs moisture well, is characterized by increased strength. Easy to wrinkle. It is used for sewing bed linen, clothes, textile products for the home.
  2. Modal. It corresponds to cotton in quality, but its hygroscopicity is one and a half times higher. It has high wear resistance. In combination with cotton fibers, modal is used for sewing bed textiles.
  3. Acetate. For production, cellulose waste is used - acetyl cellulose. The fabric comes out thin, with a slight sheen, outwardly resembles silk. Resistant to deformation, does not tolerate high temperatures, dissolves under the influence of acetone. Acetate is often used as lining.
  4. Cupra. The most expensive and high-quality type of viscose. It is made on the basis of cotton cellulose. Material in appearance and quality indicators is close to silk. It has high breathability, thermoregulation, and durability. It requires delicate care. Cupra fabric is used for tailoring evening and holiday dresses.
